Welcome to Sumi's Kitchen

This is a hands-on cooking class,which includes cooking demonstrations, recipes to take home, the experience to make your Japanese dishes by yourself and a tasting of the dishes.
This class will also provide an introduction to Japanese culture through lessons on dining etiquette and information on food in Japan.

Profile of Sumi Saikawa

Sumi Saikawa was born at Kobe in Japan as a daughter of a priest at a Zen Temple, which is the one of the biggest Zen Temples in Kobe.
The Zen temple traditionally offers the vegetarian meal called “Shojin Ryouri” to worshippers; sometimes the number of people can be over 100 on the same day. She was influenced by that environment surrounding her since childhood. She chose to go to the Department of Nutrition Studies at university because of this influence.
She graduated as a home economist, nutritionist and dietician.

She joined a nutrition academy, which was a special school for chefs and nutritionists. She worked as a teacher and also contributed to TV food preparation and nutrition shows as well as to books. She demonstrated healthy cooking classes for organizations such as the Diabetes Association.
At the same time, she was a consultant for a Japanese company, looking after employees and family health.
She came to Australia with her husband in 1991 and started teaching at Community Colleges and TAFE.

She now has her own Cooking Class called Sumi's Kitchen and conducts classes for Australians, Japanese and children.
